Boulder, Colorado – April 20, 2015 – U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker announced that Dr. William B. Gail, Co-Founder and CTO of Global Weather Corporation and Past-President of the American Meteorological Society, has been appointed to serve on the new Commerce Data Advisory Council (CDAC). CDAC was created to spur economic and social development by ensuring that the most useful Commerce Department data is made available to American businesses and citizens.
“I am honored to be appointed to CDAC, and commend Secretary Pritzker and the Commerce Department for creating the Council and promoting open data along with the vision of a data nation,” said Bill Gail. “This Council is being asked to tackle important questions dealing with our new world of big data – how to make government data more accessible, how it can become more useful to society, and how to drive better decision making throughout our economy. While supporting a charter that cuts across all Commerce activities, I will bring the specific perspective of environmental data – notably weather, water, and climate – and its critical importance to a data nation.”
The first CDAC meeting will occur Thursday, April 23rd to Friday, April 24th in Washington D.C. (See Department of Commerce press release)
The 19 members of the CDAC will provide Secretary Pritzker and the DOC data-bureau leadership with guidance on data management and data policy. For more information about the CDAC, including a list of all the members, see: http://www.esa.doc.gov/
